Oonagh Boman Makeup Excellence Awards 2011
As a graduate of the Oonagh Boman School of Makeup, this year I was eligible to enter the Makeup Excellence Awards and totally jumped at the chance!
The competition deadline just so happened to be on the day my first little baby was due so to say I jumped in feet first was an understatement! I always like to keep myself busy but perhaps completing my portfolio just hours after my waters broke was a step too far?!?! I'm so glad I did though as I was shortlisted as a finalist and found out at a glitzy press launch at The Ivory restaurant in Belfast.
As one of six finalists I was given the theme NEW ROMANTICS and had to prepare a storyboard and do a live makeup infront of the judging panel which included fashion photographer Jim Crone and Style Academy director Tracey Hall. I went into slight panic mode as this competition meant a lot to me and I wanted to do so well. My research took me through the 80s looking at icons such as Steve Strange and Boy George and drawing inspiration from the Blitz club in London. I was very excited as I started to create my look. I chose a male model to fit within the theme, quite a bold move considering the other finalists all had females, but I think it worked! My model Kit was AMAZING - he totally did my makeup proud! It was such an enjoyable day and I realised why I love my job...I LOVE being creative and being surrounded by such talented people! A massive thanks must go out to Elaine Hill who joined us after the competition for a half hour shoot to capture my work!

On 4th July I attended a gala evening in The Ivory with family and friends when the winner was announced by Eugenia Weston founder of the fantastically beautiful Senna Cosmetics. All I can say is wowsers - what a show! The makeup and styling in the fashion show was outstanding and the food was delish! My nerves didn't allow my to eat my sticky toffee pudding though so I am on a mission to return for my pudding!
The awards were presented by none other than Julian Simmons who called each finalist up on stage for a mini interview before the winner was unveiled...mmm...I am not good at being put on the spot! It was one of those moments when you knew you were talking, hoped it made sense and got off stage with a hundred and one better answers!

ANYWAY!...In what was described as a very tough competition by the judging panel, I'm so delighted I was placed joint Highly Commended (2nd place!) and was presented with a stunning bouquet of flowers from Oonagh, Julian and Eugenia!

Now onto the next competition...I'm a little addicted!
Oh and here's a little pic of baby Riley who arrived in the middle of everything!
